Gerald Dawavendewa (Hopi & Cherokee)

A Crane stands above a bowl of various corn ears as a parrot rests upon the corn. A black bird crosses the horizon, announcing the arrival of rain clouds. Cloud and rain imagery ascends in the background, and mounds of sacred corn meal sit upon the earth.

This artwork was inspired by the ancient Hopi paintings that once covered the walls of kivas, underground structures that served as social and ceremonially functions. I used textured paints to reflect the ancient mineral paints.
