Matted artwork print

Gerald Dawavendewa (Hopi & Cherokee)

A Moon Katsina, a spirit from outer space. Muuyawu is an important deity in the Hopi religion. This spirit guards people at night and provides particular lunar messages for phases of Hopi ceremonies. Muuyawu assists in maintaining a balance in the universe.

Katsinam are benevolent spirits that bring ceremonies to the Hopi. These rituals are performed throughout the year until their return to the spirit world. They represent many roles, from warriors, animals, plants, and elements such as rain and stars. As a bridge between this world and the spiritual, they remind the Hopi people of the path of life.
